19th Century Cottages - Bristol Road South

Long gone cottages and gardens on Bristol Road South, opposite the Traveller's Rest pub were built in the early nineteenth century and were occupied until 1968. By 1969 they were vacant awaiting demolition for the building of the Grosvenor Shopping Centre. In 1937 one of the cottages sold flowers, then further along towards the village were a few shops and a space where Mr Dews sold second-hand cars. He also ran a cafe used frequently by van and lorry drivers, and known as Smoky Joes. (O. Williams)

1905 map of the area. Main road is Bristol Road South. Pathway at the side of Smoky Joe's led to 3 cottages. Another footpath 5 houses up, led to 14 tunnel back houses in a row overlooking Victoria Common.
