Cottages in Merritts Brook Lane, 1950s. In the seventeenth century Merritts Brook was divided from Paradise by a field path and all the cottages in this area had nail-shops attached. Today only two cottages remain. Rhoda Ricketts and Gladys Callow (members of the Niblett family), who lived nearby, recall how in their early years children were bathed before the fire in a tin bath, which had to be filled by hand. Rhoda and Gladys remember how they thought they were in heaven when they moved to a house in Aliens Farm Road containing two main rooms and an upstairs bathroom with running hot water. (G. Callow)
Paradise was a group of four cottages on the Turnpike, later Bell Hill, they had been a workhouse and gaol (jail) but was converted in to cottages in 1820. (Northfield Library)
