Northfield Railway Station

Original main entrance to center platforms (bricked up now)

The original Victorian Northfield station was opened on 1st. September, 1870 by the Midland Railway. In 1892, the line through Northfield was quadrupled. The platform was in the center of the rails, so access was made by this now long bricked-up entrance on Church Hill with plants growing out of the bricks, I think that there was also a stairway from under the road rail bridge, have a look next time you walk under, probably thought it was a broom cupboard. In 1913 the station house was the subject of an arson attack by suffragettes. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished before serious damage was done. They also set fire to Northfield Library. The Station we know now was rebuild in 1978.
