The Tudor Grill & The Far East

The Far East, now closed restaurant was once a doctor's surgery in the late 50's early 60's run by a Dr's Watts, Morrison & Davies, Dave tells me. Around 1965 a builder bought it and converted it into a shop front with an interior done out as a Tudor themed grill. When he had finished  he gave the grill to his daughter as a present around 1966. She didn't want it so decided to sell it and was bought by Mr & Mrs Chow around 1967. Their son Ying & daughter Wah helped run the restaurant with other staff. It was a seated restaurant then with Take Out. When Mr Chow died in 1986 his wife continued until forced by poor health to hand over to Wah. She who had married in 1970 and her husband Dave who now left teaching job in 1987 joined the business. It was the first Chinese restaurant in the area. Ying ran his own restaurant next to Vasity Tavern in Bournbrook until moving to Ling Tung in Stechford. He also owns the shop that was called 'the Good old days'on the corner of Chelston Road, next-door-but-one, and has spent some years renovating the building to it's present fine state. The Far East with Dave, Wah and Royston ended up changing it to a take away only, in the late 1980's. During these years the Far East team, especially Dave with his humorous chat to the regulars, made many friends in Northfield, and has been very much missed.
