The Druids Plant an Oak Tree

On 25 October 1953, the Northfield branch of the Ancient Order of Druids planted an oak sapling (an emblem of their order) as a natural memorial to the Coronation of Elizabeth II. In full  regalia, and carrying symbolic crooks, they conducted an hour-long ceremony of 3,000 words, starting with the lighting of the mystic flame, and marked by the sprinkling of water from the Isle of Anglesey and wood-ash from Stonehenge. The sapling, from the Forest of Arden, was blessed by the Chaplain of Northfield Lodge, and hymns were sung. (Martin Hampson's Images Of England)
