By 1900 a large mansion on the Bristol Road South near St Lawrence Road
called Gainsborough House, originally built in the 17th century, was
renamed The Priory and became home to the Convent of our Lady of Charity
housing up to twenty nuns and girls. The grounds of the Priory nearly
reached Heath Road South and included a circuitous woodland walk and a
large lake. Demolished in the 1990s the Priory and its grounds are now
covered by a modern housing estate and an extension to the Royal
Orthopedic Hospital.
