Section of a Map of Worcestershire (late 16th Century.)
Made by William Sheldon's Tapestry Weavers. the property of the Bodleian Library. Oxford. In this map, made of coloured wool and silk, it is interesting to note the remarkable picture of the cerebrated beacon on the Lickey Hills - a large iron tripod supporting an upright bar with five steps for ascent and on the summit a cresset from which flames are emerging. Not far away is the Bell Inn — the only Inn represented on the map. This may be a Bell Inn situated five miles due west of the Lickey Hills or the Bell Inn, Northifield.
